An information asset is an identifiable piece or collection of data which is stored and recognized as having business value.  This includes the attributes concerning its business meaning, rules used to create or define the information, policies regarding control and authorities, and other essential characteristics.  This information can come from a variety of sources, which may include, but are not limited to database records, analytics and reporting, information integration processes, and tools used to exercise business process control.
