Gelatin is a thickening agent used in desserts, yogurt, puddings, ice cream, cheese spreads, and other foods. Gelatin is a protein derived from animal bones, hooves, and other parts.  Gelatin generally comes in powder or sheet form. 

Gelatin is obtained from animal bones (also known as “stratified” or “molded”) and hides that have been boiled to make jelly. The gelatin is derived from animal bones that have been partially hydrolyzed by subjecting them to high temperatures. The purpose of making this product is to render the substances more malleable and more digestible. For this reason, gelatin is used in the manufacturing of many foods, especially candies.

Gelatin is produced from animal bones or hides (depending on what is utilized) in varying quantities, qualities, and properties. The more gelatin is processed, the higher the quality, consistency, and texture. Because of its uses in manufacturing, gelatin has had a great deal of scientific attention over the years. Later, researchers found that some of the products of digestion, such as gelatin, are important to the human body. Their studies revealed that some people lack certain digestive enzymes needed to break down the fat in their stomachs. When the stomach contains excess fat, the person may feel bloated, experience chronic abdominal pain, and develop small intestine problems or intrarectal cancer. To neutralize this excess fat, gelatin can be taken. It helps to restore the functionality of the gut.

The digestive system breaks down proteins and other nutrients into simple sugars called peptides and starches. Some of these elements are resistant to gastric acid and digestive enzymes, making them more difficult for the stomach to digest. Besides helping maintain healthy skin, research has shown that some gelatin may help fight off some forms of cancer. It is not clear how this works, but one of the results of some recent studies was that gelatin caused a reduction in the growth of cancer cells when injected into the body. The results were similar to those of chemotherapy. While not a cure-all, some medical experts believe that by increasing the body’s supply of collagen and other protein sources, people may live longer and ward off certain cancers in the future.

While it is impossible to say for sure what gelatin does to our health, it is clear that this naturally occurring product is beneficial to the skin.
