In today’s recipe, we’re going to learn how to prepare an all-time American favorite: Honey Butter Mashed Sweet Potatoes. This side dish variation is an excellent (and healthier) comfort food choice for all kinds of family gatherings, like Christmas, Thanksgiving, or just a regular fall Sunday family get-together.

- Sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed – 1.5 lbs (700g).
- Rosemary – one sprig (optional).
- Butter – 4 tbsp (60ml).
- Honey – 1-2 tbsp (15-30ml).
- Fine Sea Salt – A half tsp (2.5g).
- Ground Nutmeg – A quarter tsp (1.25g).
- Black Pepper – Optional.
- Bring the sweet potatoes to boil: fill a medium-size pot with water and salt, and simmer until they get fork-tender, no more than 10 minutes. In the last 2 minutes, throw the rosemary sprig for added flavor.
- Drain and steam: after, you’ll place them back into the pot at the lowest heat setting. Cook them until they look dry enough, and you have removed all the excess water.
- Mash and serve: mix the cooked sweet potatoes with butter, honey, salt, pepper, and nutmeg, until you achieve a nice and smooth texture with just the right amount of seasoning. Garnish it with fresh rosemary or thyme leaves, and serve while still hot.
- Look out for small black spots covering the sweet potatoes. These spots are also known as “black rot,” and when boiled, sweet potatoes tend to leave a nasty, rotten smell all over your kitchen.
- Alternatively, you can microwave the sweet potatoes until they get tender, making this side dish an excellent alternative for when the oven gets a little too crowded. Time will vary according to your microwave.
- Leftovers? Not a problem. Just store them in small containers (preferably glass) and freeze them for the next family gathering.
