Have you ever wondered about the importance of snacks for your health? Have you ever wondered why healthy people tend to be in better shape than those who do not eat a lot? Do you find yourself snacking even if you are not hungry? Do you believe that the reason behind this is that snacks provide the body with the energy it needs during the day?

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that Dr. David Davenport, associate clinical professor at the University of Iowa School of Medicine, believes that eating regularly helps in losing weight. He has studied obesity and weight loss extensively and believed that eating at regular intervals keeps the hunger sensation at bay and improves energy levels throughout the day. He also believed that certain types of snacks could help keep hunger at bay, thus improving your ability to lose weight. He has listed some of his favorites as follows:

  • Nuts are a good source of protein. The American Dietary Association has advised people to snack on nuts every three hours for improved nutrition. This may sound like a good idea, but according to Dr. Davenport, eating nuts at regular intervals was found to reduce the risk of diabetes. He cited studies that were conducted by Swedish researchers. These studies found that individuals who ate nuts at least five times a week were less likely to develop diabetes. Besides, the intake of nuts was linked to lower blood pressure and cholesterol.
  • Eggs is another excellent source of protein. According to Dr. Davenport, consuming at least six eggs a week provides the necessary protein to build and repair muscles. He also cited research that was done by Michigan State University that supported his claims. The researchers found that athletes, who regularly snacked on eggs, were more likely to have thicker and more powerful muscles. Also, consuming eggs reduces the risks of heart disease and stroke.
  • A Florida Department of Health study found that those who snack had higher energy levels than those who didn’t. The study showed that a breakfast snack bar was more beneficial for boosting energy than a candy bar. Those who don’t snack were found to have low energy levels. This is yet another reason why the importance of a snack bar can’t be overemphasized. They can keep you going until lunchtime.
  • Some studies have indicated that diet soda is bad for you. It’s actually believed that diet sodas contain more calories than regular soda. But, it’s important to note that these studies were on overweight or obese individuals. Consuming diet bars can be beneficial for thin people because they replace the empty calories in your body with something good for you, such as nuts, seeds, fruits, or veggies.

The importance of snacks can be realized both while you’re in the middle of the day, especially when you’re not working out. For instance, if you’re trying to lose weight, you should snack on almonds for their high fiber content at least twice a day. Also, make sure that your snacks are made of natural ingredients. Some of the best snacks include potato chips, pretzels, and carrots.

The importance of snacks can also be realized during the week, as long as you make sure that your snacks are healthy and of high enough quality to satisfy any cravings you might have. Try packing some nuts in your purse, satchel, or briefcase if you plan to work out during the day. You will feel better when you have something good to eat at the end of the day than if you’re eating junk food.
