Recipe – Classic Apple Streusel Pie

When it comes to easy-to-make, delicious desserts that go great with a cup of coffee or hot cocoa, we’d have to say classic apple streusel pie is near the top of the list.

If you don’t know that streusel is, it’s merely a German word meaning “crumbles” or “sprinkles” – what’s called Streuselkuchen in German-speaking countries is called crumb cake in the United States. So, when we say apple streusel pie, we mean a deep-dish, apple crumb cake.

All that being said, let’s get started with this easy-to-follow classic apple streusel (crumble apple) pie recipe.

Basic Recipe Information

Prep Time

  • 25 minutes

Cooking Time

  • 45 minutes

  • 6 to 8 depending on the size of each slice

  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Food Processor (Optional)
  • Baking Sheet

For the pie crust:

  • 1 cup (150 grams) of flour
  • 2 teaspoons (8.4 grams) sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2 grams) salt
  • 1 stick of butter

Or 1 unbaked 9-inch (23 cm)deep-dish pie shell

For the crumbs (streusel):

  • 1 cup (150 grams) of flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2 grams) cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup (43 grams) sugar
  • 1 stick of butter

For the filling:

  • 8 Granny Smith Apples
  • 1/3 cup (43 grams) sugar
  • 1 teaspoon (4.2 grams) ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1.2 ml) vanilla extract

Preparation Directions

1) This first step is OPTIONAL, depending on whether or not you’d like to make your own crust. If so, do that first, as you’ll have to let it cool in the refrigerator overnight.

To make your own crust, mix your flour, sugar, and salt in a bowl. Convert your butter into small balls that fit between your fingertips and “massage” into the mixture. Stir until combined.

Form mixture into pie-shape on plastic wrap and then leave in refrigerator overnight.

Alternatively, you can simply use an unbaked pie shell – don’t worry, this isn’t “cheating,” and in some cases, it’s simply not necessary to create your own crust.

2) Preheat your oven to 350 F (175 C)

3) Now, create your crumbs. Whisk your butter, sugar, cinnamon, and flour in a bowl. Rub through your fingers until ground down into fine crumbs. Alternatively, you can use a food processor to mix ingredients – it should come out somewhat “crumbly.” When ready, set aside.

4) Now it’s time for the filling. Peel and core your 8 Granny Smith apples, cut into thin slices, and mix with sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla extract.

5) Put the filling into your pie shell. Sprinkle crumbs/streusel on top, covering completely.

6) Bake the whole thing at 350 degrees for around 45 minutes. If the crumbs start to brown too early, place foil on top to prevent burning.

7) Carefully remove from oven using oven mitts and cut into slices, as thin or wide as desired

That’s all! Now, you’ll have a delicious apple streusel pie for 6-8 people.

You can serve as is or consider putting some vanilla ice cream on top, or serve vanilla ice cream on the side. Other things to try include honey or possibly a dab of cider syrup to enhance the apple taste even more.
