This also implies that some general standards must be followed for all the departments under a single administrative wing.

Unity, in a sense, gives them a sense of identity – each employee in an administrative department is a part of a cohesive unit. It is also reflected in the standardization of behavior expected from employees in every workstream. In fact, since there is a requirement to have uniform behavior across all employees of the organization, it becomes essential that these employees, together with their supervisors, develop mutual cooperative efforts to uphold the principles of administrative management. They need to develop a sense of uniformity throughout the organization to make the work process more smooth and consistent. This leads to increased productivity and better quality of output, and eventually to better profits for all concerned.

In this paper, we shall endeavor to explore the theoretical foundations of the principles of administrative management. This is a very important aspect of this subject. No matter how small a firm is, it must have a certain organizational structure based on bureaucratic management principles, as one cannot develop efficient and fruitful business without a smooth bureaucratic work process. If smooth functioning is to be maintained, all the employees must enjoy a high level of job satisfaction and a reasonable degree of job security. All these factors are presuppositions of the principles of administrative management.

To derive the necessary theoretical principles of administrative management, one needs to understand concepts like motivation, quality control, and the environment in which the firm operates. All these concepts are interrelated. It is impossible to develop a set of abstract principles that can be applied at any given organization without having a clear picture of how the organization works. An attempt to do so would lead to an inappropriate application of the principles. The only way to derive a meaningful set of principles is by analyzing the nature of the business at a practical level and drawing all relevant facts. This process of analysis will give rise to useful and meaningful principles of administrative management.

The principles of administrative management must have a rational basis. These principles need to be clearly formulated so that the managers cannot claim ignorance as an excuse for ignoring them. The main problem arises because the principles are supposed to be universal, and managers feel that they cannot apply these principles differently even within their own organization. This could result in a lot of confusion.

The classical approach has provided a great deal of guidance on how to formulate principles of management theory. But this does not mean that the principles of the classical approach are a static entity that cannot be changed to fit the changing environment. On the contrary, the principles of the classical approach have been repeatedly tested against various concrete situations over many years. This situation has made the principles almost universally applicable.

The managerial theories of today still adhere to some of the basic principles of the theoretical management process. These include the concept of individual accountability, group accountability. These principles are derived from the general assumptions of the theory of the management process. Other important principles of administrative management theories include:

  • the factors that govern the cost-effectiveness of the production of a product or a service,
  • the factors that govern the level of productivity of employees,
  • the factors that govern the effectiveness of the customer satisfaction program,
  • and the factors that affect the firm’s ability to develop new services or products.

Administrative theory is also based on various models such as the four-actor model, the triad model, the demand-based scheduling, and the multiple process organization. These models are usually used by managers in their day-to-day activities. Some of the managers rely on principles of administrative management theory, while others use the principles for implementing reforms within their organization. No matter what management theory you choose to apply, it should be adapted to suit the firm’s specific needs.
