Balanced pasta dinner can be hearty and satisfying while including the foods that
make a meal feel complete: pasta, a source of protein, vegetables, and a flavorful
sauce. The proportions are flexible. A few practical choices, such as using whole
grain pasta or adding beans and extra vegetables, can make an everyday bowl more
varied without turning dinner into a complicated project.

## What makes a balanced pasta dinner?

Pasta supplies carbohydrates, which provide energy, and can serve as the base of
a filling meal. To round it out, pair it with protein and vegetables. Protein might
come from chicken, fish, eggs, beans, lentils, tofu, or cheese. Vegetables add color,
texture, and flavor, and they can be mixed into the sauce or served alongside the
pasta.

Sauce ties the components together. Tomato sauce, pesto, olive oil with garlic,
and light cream sauces can all work. The amount and type of sauce will affect the
meal’s overall nutrition, so consider what else is in the bowl. A tomato-based sauce
with vegetables may call for a little olive oil and Parmesan; a rich cream sauce
may need only a modest amount of cheese or added oil.

There is no single correct portion for everyone. Appetite, activity, age, and personal
needs vary. As a starting point, picture pasta taking up a substantial part of the
bowl, with vegetables and protein clearly present rather than used only as a garnish.
Adjust the amounts to suit the people eating.

## Choosing pasta and building the bowl

A whole grain pasta dinner is one simple way to add variety. Whole wheat pasta generally
contains more fiber than refined pasta, though its firmer texture and nuttier flavor
may take getting used to. If your household prefers regular pasta, it can still
be part of a balanced meal. Try mixing the two types or changing the pasta gradually.

For protein vegetable pasta, think about flavor and cooking time. White beans and
chickpeas pair easily with tomato sauce. Chicken works with pesto or a lemon-and-
garlic sauce. Shrimp cooks quickly and suits vegetables such as peas, spinach, and
zucchini. Lentils make a substantial vegetarian addition, while tofu can be browned
before it is tossed with noodles and vegetables.

Choose vegetables that fit the dish and the time available. Broccoli, mushrooms,
peppers, spinach, zucchini, peas, and kale are all useful options. Fresh, frozen,
or canned vegetables can work; drain canned vegetables when needed and follow package
directions for frozen varieties. Add sturdy vegetables early enough to soften, and
stir tender greens in near the end so they wilt without becoming mushy.

## An easy all-in-one pasta combination

This combination makes four generous servings and can be adjusted to what is in
the refrigerator.

**Ingredients**

– 12 ounces whole wheat or regular penne
 – 1 tablespoon olive oil – 1 pound boneless,
skinless chicken breast, cut into bite-size pieces – 1 large head broccoli, cut
into small florets – 2 cloves garlic, minced – 1 can (14 to 15 ounces) crushed tomatoes–
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano – Salt and black pepper – 1/4 cup grated Parmesan, plus
more for serving

Cook the pasta in salted water according to the package directions. Before draining,
reserve about 1/2 cup of the cooking water. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large skillet
over medium heat. Add the chicken, season with salt and pepper, and cook, stirring
occasionally, until browned and cooked through. The thickest pieces should reach
165°F.

Add the broccoli and garlic to the skillet. Stir for a minute, then add the tomatoes
and oregano. Cover and simmer until the broccoli is tender, adding a splash of water
if the sauce becomes too thick. Stir in the drained pasta and Parmesan. Use a little
reserved pasta water to loosen the sauce if needed, then taste and adjust the seasoning.

For a meatless version, replace the chicken with a can of drained white beans or
chickpeas. Stir them in with the tomatoes and heat until hot. You can also use mushrooms
or zucchini, cooking them in the skillet before adding the sauce.

## Make the meal fit your routine

A complete meal pasta dish does not have to be made from scratch. Jarred tomato
sauce, leftover roasted vegetables, canned beans, and prewashed greens can shorten
the work. Add ingredients in an order that suits their cooking time: brown meat
or mushrooms first, simmer firm vegetables in the sauce, and fold in quick-cooking
greens near the end.

Leftovers can make lunch easier. Refrigerate cooked pasta and other perishable ingredients
promptly in a covered container. Reheat portions until steaming hot, adding a spoonful
of water or sauce if the pasta has dried out. Keeping the sauce separate can help
some pasta dishes retain a better texture.

Pasta dinner nutrition depends on the ingredients and portions, so a bowl is not
automatically balanced because it includes noodles. The useful test is simple: does
the meal include a satisfying source of protein and a meaningful amount of vegetables
alongside the pasta? With those components in place, hearty pasta bowls can be both
convenient and varied, whether the sauce comes from a jar or a skillet.
