Soil tests provide valuable insight into soil pH and fertility levels, helping to
prevent fertilizer from being the cause of yield-limiting issues as well as curb
excessive nutrient applications which are both costly and damaging to the environment.
With proper fertilization comes high quality trees while reduced risks of groundwater
contamination from nitrate contamination.

## Soil Tests

An essential step when planning for your rhubarb garden, soil tests provide invaluable
information. They reveal both the type and quantity of nutrients available to plants
as well as your pH level and indicate any presence of phosphorus, potassium or calcium
present.

Results can help you select appropriate lime and fertilizer rates to maintain your
rhubarb garden’s health, but fertilizer application alone cannot ensure high yields;
other factors, including pH levels, soil moisture content, planting dates and variety
as well as insects or diseases can limit production.

To achieve optimal results, it’s essential to collect a soil sample prior to applying
lime or fertilizer. For lawn, vegetable, and flower gardens alike, sample 8 to 10
randomly located areas before mixing your samples in a bucket until there are no
large clods of soil left, then fill the plastic bag provided with this step up until
its “fill line.” Samples will be accepted throughout the year.

## Nitrogen

Rhubarb boasts a deep, rhizomatous root system which stores nutrients for improved
soil health. A perennial crop, Rhubarb requires meticulous cultivation in order
to grow large enough and be harvested successfully.

Organic matter needs to be added regularly in order to provide food for soil microorganisms,
leading to better soil structure, aeration and drainage. Mineralized nutrients from
these organic materials become available to crops as nutrients like nitrogen are
mineralized from them.

NCDA&CS soil reports incorporate nitrogen recommendations derived from years of
research and field observations. To optimize yield potential, organic and synthetic
sources of nitrogen may both be utilized; sidedress applications of rapidly available
organic material like blood meal, feather meal or seed meals may help achieve these
rates more easily. In order to keep track of nutrient levels through plant tissue
analysis.

## Phosphorous

Rhubarb is a perennial plant with leaves and stalks. While it makes for an attractive
garden addition, be mindful that both its roots and leaves contain toxic amounts
of oxalic acid that could potentially poisoning. Doing so could result in nausea,
vomiting and abdominal pain among other side effects.

Growing rhubarb helps improve soil health by aerating and draining it more effectively,
but it is vulnerable to disease and pests such as deer, rabbits and rodents. Keep
an eye out for signs of rot like yellowing roots or yellowed foliage – these could
indicate overwatering that can lead to nutritional deficiencies in your plants.

Phosphorus, like nitrogen and potassium, is an essential macronutrient. An excess
of phosphorus can have severe environmental ramifications such as degradation of
ecosystems and the eutrophication of lakes, rivers and oceans. Therefore, its natural
cycle must be managed carefully in order to minimize loss and ensure food security.

## Potash

Rhubarb requires 2-3 years to reach full maturity, making it an investment worth
making in terms of time and care required for a fruitful harvest. Proper care must
be provided if harvest is to occur successfully.

Rhubarb requires soils with moderate to high nitrogen concentrations in order for
it to use water efficiently and maximize crop yields.

Also, mulching helps deter weeds while encouraging root development, stops wilting,
improves plant cell membranes, increases strength and helps with food transfer.

Your soil test results will dictate the appropriate phosphorus (P2O5) and potash(
K2O) rates, so select a fertilizer which best provides them. Consider selecting
either mixed fertilizers with 46% P2O5 content or single grade materials like triple
superphosphate (46% P2O5) or sulfate of potash (50% K2O). When planting in salty
soils, avoid products containing excess chloride; these may damage roots.

## Magnesium

Rhubarb requires well-draining soil with ample nutrients in order to thrive, with
sticky roots or stunted growth being an indicator of poor conditions that could
result in stunted or stunted rhubarb development or even rot. When planting with
nightshades such as tomatoes or potatoes, avoid competing for nutrients with them
as this will only serve to attract pests!

#### Magnesium (Mg) Deficiency

On light-colored sandy soils, magnesium (Mg) deficiency is often evident as interveinal
chlorosis on lower leaves. Apply a magnesium source such as dolomitic lime or on
acidic soils gypsum; additional applications may be necessary if your soil test
recommendations show $ symbols next to Mg levels. Sul-Po-Mag or Epsom salts can
also be applied directly as foliar spray at weekly intervals – however wood ashes
should not be added as they can raise pH and leach Mg away.
