Grow Cuban oregano in a warm, bright spot with well-draining soil, and it will reward
you with thick, fragrant leaves and steady growth. Despite its name, Cuban oregano(
_Plectranthus amboinicus_ ) is not a true oregano. It is a tender, aromatic member
of the mint family, with fleshy leaves and a flavor often described as bold, savory,
and slightly camphor-like. It can grow outdoors in warm climates or in a container
that comes inside before cold weather.

## Cuban oregano care starts with warmth and drainage

Cuban oregano is a tropical perennial that does not tolerate frost. In frost-free
regions, it can grow outdoors year-round. In colder areas, grow it in a pot so you
can move it indoors when temperatures begin to fall. Frost can damage or kill the
plant, and prolonged exposure to cool conditions can slow its growth.

Choose soil that drains freely. A standard potting mix amended with perlite or another
drainage material works well in containers. In a garden bed, avoid low spots where
water collects. Cuban oregano’s succulent-like leaves and stems store moisture,
so roots left in soggy soil are more likely to rot.

A container needs drainage holes. Unglazed clay pots can help soil dry between waterings,
though plastic or glazed pots are also suitable if you use a well-draining mix and
water with care. Because the plant can spread and become top-heavy, select a stable
pot with room for its roots and stems.

## Cuban oregano sunlight indoors and outdoors

Outdoors, Cuban oregano grows well in full sun to partial shade. In areas with intense
summer heat, morning sun and light afternoon shade can help prevent leaf scorch.
If a plant has been indoors, introduce it to outdoor sunlight gradually over several
days. A sudden move into strong direct sun can burn its leaves.

For Cuban oregano indoors, give it the brightest light available. A sunny south-
or west-facing window is often suitable, though the strongest summer sun through
glass may be too intense. If the stems stretch and the spaces between leaves grow
long, the plant probably needs more light. A grow light can help in a dim room or
during winter; follow the light’s instructions for placement and daily use.

Rotate the pot occasionally so the plant grows evenly toward the light. Keep it
away from cold drafts and avoid placing it directly against a chilly window in winter.

## Cuban oregano watering without soggy roots

Water when the top inch or two of soil feels dry. Pour water until it drains from
the bottom, then empty any saucer so the pot does not sit in standing water. The
exact interval depends on light, temperature, pot size, and soil. A plant in warm
outdoor weather may need water more often than one growing indoors in winter.

Yellowing leaves and persistently wet soil can indicate overwatering. Wrinkled or
limp leaves may mean the plant needs water, although root problems can produce similar
symptoms. Check the soil before watering instead of following a fixed schedule.

During winter, growth often slows, especially indoors. Water less frequently when
the soil takes longer to dry, but do not let the root ball remain bone-dry for extended
periods.

## Propagating with Cuban oregano cuttings

Stem cuttings are an easy way to make new plants. Cut a healthy stem several inches
long, remove the leaves from its lower portion, and place the bare stem in water
or directly into moist, well-draining potting mix. Keep the cutting warm and in
bright, indirect light while it develops roots. If rooting it in water, transfer
it to soil once the roots are established.

Cuttings planted in mix should stay lightly moist, not saturated. New growth is
a good sign that the cutting has rooted. Once it is growing steadily, treat it like
a mature plant and let the soil dry somewhat between waterings.

Pruning also helps keep the parent plant compact. Pinch or trim stem tips above
a pair of leaves to encourage branching. If stems become long or woody, cut them
back gradually rather than removing most of the plant at once.

## Harvesting Cuban oregano

Pick individual leaves as needed, preferably from established stems. Younger leaves
are tender, while larger mature leaves have a stronger aroma. Use the herb sparingly
at first because its flavor can be more intense than that of Mediterranean oregano.
It works in many cooked dishes, including soups, beans, stews, and meat preparations.

Regular harvesting can encourage branching, but avoid stripping a stem bare. Leave
enough foliage for the plant to keep growing. Harvest in the morning after dew has
dried for leaves that are clean and fragrant. Rinse them before use, and store extra
leaves in the refrigerator or dry them for later cooking.

## Bringing Cuban oregano through winter

Before the first expected frost, bring container plants indoors. Check leaves and
stems for insects, then rinse the plant and inspect it for pests such as mealybugs,
scale, or spider mites. Place it in a bright, warm location and give it time to
adjust.

Growth may slow indoors during winter, so reduce watering and avoid heavy pruning
or fertilizing until active growth resumes. In spring, move the plant back outside
gradually, starting in a sheltered, partly shaded spot. With warmth, good drainage,
and enough light, Cuban oregano is a forgiving herb that can thrive in a garden
bed or on a sunny windowsill.
