Grow curry leaf tree in a pot if you live where winter temperatures fall below freezing.
Curry leaf tree (Murraya koenigii) is a tropical plant that can thrive outdoors
in warm weather, then move indoors for winter. It is not the same as the unrelated“
curry plant” (Helichrysum italicum), whose leaves have a different flavor. In a
cold climate, the main tasks are giving the tree strong light, keeping its roots
from staying wet, and bringing it inside before cold weather damages it.

## Choose a pot and soil that drain well

A curry leaf plant pot needs drainage holes. Choose a container only slightly larger
than the root ball; an oversized pot holds more wet soil than a young plant can
use. Plastic, glazed ceramic, and terracotta containers can all work. Terracotta
dries faster, so check its soil more often, especially in warm or windy weather.

Use a loose, well-draining potting mix. A standard indoor or container mix amended
with perlite or another coarse drainage material can help prevent water from lingering
around the roots. Avoid garden soil, which can compact in a container. The goal
for curry leaf soil is a mix that holds some moisture but drains freely.

Water thoroughly until excess drains from the bottom, then empty the saucer. Let
the upper layer of soil dry before watering again. The interval depends on pot size,
temperature, light, and airflow. In summer, a small pot may need frequent checks;
in a cool winter room, it may dry much more slowly.

## Provide enough curry leaf light

Outdoors, place the tree where it receives several hours of direct sun, increasing
exposure gradually if it has been indoors. A sheltered, sunny patio or balcony is
often suitable. In very hot weather, some protection from harsh afternoon sun can
reduce leaf scorch, especially for a plant that has not acclimated.

Indoors, set it near the brightest available window, ideally one with strong direct
light. A south- or west-facing window may work, depending on the home and season.
If the plant becomes leggy or drops leaves in a dim room, add a grow light and keep
it on a consistent daily schedule. Rotate the pot periodically so growth does not
lean toward the window.

## Plan curry leaf overwintering before frost

Murraya koenigii is cold-sensitive. A light frost can injure it, and freezing temperatures
may kill stems or the whole plant. Bring the container indoors before frost is forecast,
rather than waiting for visible damage. A protected spot outside may help during
a brief cool night, but it is not a reliable substitute for indoor shelter in a
freezing climate.

Before moving the tree inside, inspect the leaves and stems for pests. Rinse the
foliage and check leaf undersides for spider mites, scale, or other insects. If
possible, keep the plant apart from houseplants for a short period while you monitor
it.

A bright room is preferable. Avoid placing the pot beside a heating vent, where
hot, dry air can stress the leaves. Growth often slows in winter, so the plant may
use less water. Check the soil before watering and do not keep it constantly damp.
Hold off on regular fertilizer until active growth resumes.

For short periods of chilly weather, frost protection can include moving the pot
against a sheltered wall and covering the plant with frost cloth. Remove the cover
once temperatures rise. This may reduce exposure to a mild frost, but it cannot
protect a tropical plant from a hard or prolonged freeze. Moving it indoors is the
safer choice.

## Diagnose curry leaf yellow leaves

A few older leaves may yellow and fall as the plant adjusts to a new location or
season. Widespread yellowing, rapid leaf drop, or soft stems call for a closer look.

Check the soil first. Persistently wet soil, poor drainage, or water left in a saucer
can stress roots and lead to yellow leaves. If the mix stays soggy, improve drainage
and let it dry somewhat before watering again. If the soil is very dry and pulling
away from the pot, water it thoroughly.

Also consider light and temperature changes. A tree moved from outdoor sun to a
dim room may shed leaves, as may one exposed to cold drafts. Indoors, inspect for
spider mites and scale, which can become more noticeable in dry conditions. Correct
the growing conditions before adding fertilizer; extra feeding will not solve problems
caused by wet roots, low light, or cold.

## Prune and harvest without weakening the tree

Curry leaf pruning helps control size and encourages branching. Use clean pruners
to remove dead, damaged, or crossing stems. For routine shaping, prune during active
growth in spring or summer, and avoid taking away a large share of the foliage at
once. A plant needs its leaves to make energy, particularly after the stress of
winter.

Harvest leaves as needed by snipping leafy stems or pinching growing tips. Avoid
stripping one branch bare or taking most of the foliage from a small plant. Regular,
modest harvesting can keep a healthy tree compact while leaving enough leaves for
continued growth. Fresh leaves have the strongest aroma; extras can be frozen for
later use.

When spring nights are reliably mild, move the tree back outdoors gradually. Start
in a sheltered, partly shaded spot, then increase its sun exposure over several
days. This transition helps prevent leaf scorch and gives the plant time to adjust
before the growing season begins.
