Roman chamomile care is straightforward once the plant has the conditions it prefers:
plenty of sun, soil that drains freely, and regular water while it gets established.
This low-growing perennial can form a soft, fragrant mat and produce small, daisy-
like flowers. It works well along paths, at the edge of a garden bed, or in a container,
though it will not withstand heavy foot traffic like a durable lawn.

## How to grow Roman chamomile

Roman chamomile (_Chamaemelum nobile_) is a creeping perennial native to western
Europe. Its finely divided, aromatic leaves usually grow just a few inches tall,
while flowering stems rise above the foliage. The exact chamomile plant height depends
on the variety and conditions, but most plants stay low enough to serve as a ground
cover.

Choose a planting site with good air circulation and soil that does not remain soggy.
Roman chamomile can spread over time, so give it room or use edging to keep it within
bounds. It may also self-seed where flowers are allowed to mature.

Spring is a good time to plant nursery-grown plants, after the soil has warmed and
the risk of hard frost has passed. Space plants according to their mature spread,
often about 8 to 12 inches apart, and water them after planting. They may take time
to knit into a continuous mat, especially in less-than-ideal conditions.

Roman chamomile is sometimes used as a lawn alternative, but it is best in places
with little foot traffic. Occasional brushing or stepping may be tolerated, but
repeated trampling can thin the plants and leave bare patches. For a path that gets
regular use, place stepping stones through the planting.

## Roman chamomile sunlight and drainage

Full sun encourages compact growth and flowering. In hot climates, a site with some
afternoon shade can help prevent stress, though too much shade may produce a thinner
mat and fewer flowers. Roman chamomile sunlight needs are flexible, but a bright
location is the safest choice for dense growth.

Good drainage is especially important. The plant can manage a range of ordinary
garden soils, including moderately poor soil, but roots may rot in ground that stays
wet. If your soil is heavy clay, improve drainage by planting on a slight slope
or raised bed. Avoid adding amendments that create a water-holding pocket around
the roots.

Water new plants when the soil begins to dry, keeping the root zone evenly moist
during establishment. Once rooted in, Roman chamomile is somewhat drought tolerant,
although extended dry spells can weaken growth. Water deeply during prolonged heat
or drought, then let the surface soil dry before watering again. Frequent shallow
watering is unnecessary and can encourage weak, shallow roots.

## Ongoing care and spreading

Roman chamomile generally needs little fertilizer. Rich soil and heavy feeding can
encourage lush, loose growth at the expense of a dense mat. If growth is poor, first
check whether the site is too shady or stays wet before adding fertilizer.

Trim the plant after flowering if it becomes ragged or spreads beyond its allotted
space. A light cutback can encourage fresh foliage, but avoid cutting deeply into
bare, woody stems. Remove spent flowers if you want to limit self-seeding. In colder
areas, the foliage may die back or look worn in winter and return when spring growth
begins.

Established clumps can be renewed with Roman chamomile divisions. In spring or early
fall, lift a healthy section with roots attached and separate it into smaller pieces.
Replant the divisions promptly at the same depth, firm the soil around them, and
water well. Keep the soil lightly moist as the new sections settle in.

## Roman chamomile in pots

Roman chamomile in pots is a practical choice for patios, balconies, and small gardens.
Use a container with drainage holes and a free-draining potting mix. A pot that
is at least 8 inches deep gives the roots room, while a wider container lets the
plant spread.

Containers dry faster than garden soil, so check moisture during warm weather. Water
when the top layer of mix feels dry, then allow excess water to drain. Do not leave
the pot sitting in a saucer full of water. In cold climates, container-grown roots
may be more exposed to winter temperatures than plants in the ground; move the pot
to a sheltered location or protect it during severe cold.

## Harvesting Roman chamomile flowers

For Roman chamomile harvest, pick flowers when they are fully open and dry, preferably
after morning dew has evaporated. Snip the flower heads with a small amount of stem,
leaving enough foliage for the plant to keep growing. Frequent picking can encourage
additional blooms.

Spread the flowers in a single layer in a dry, airy place away from direct sun.
Once completely dry, store them in an airtight container in a cool, dark cupboard.
Chamomile is commonly used for herbal tea, but people with allergies to plants in
the daisy family should use caution. For any medicinal use, consult a qualified
health professional, especially during pregnancy or when taking medication.
