Local guidance can differ with climate, soil, and production system, so treat the numbers as a regional recommendation rather than a universal rule. ## Prepare the bed before separating cloves Choose full sun and well-drained soil. Remove weeds and loosen the planting area enough to place cloves without forcing them into hard ground. Use soil-test recommendations for amendments. Planting deeper will not solve drainage problems, and adding fertilizer directly against a clove can damage developing roots. Separate the bulb shortly before planting, leaving each clove’s protective skin intact. Choose firm, sound cloves and set aside soft, damaged, or moldy ones. Plant individual cloves rather than burying an entire clustered bulb. ## Place the root end down Set each clove with its broad basal end downward and pointed end upward. Make a hole or furrow first, place the clove, then cover and firm gently. Do not press hard enough to injure the basal plate. Depth instructions are sometimes written ambiguously: a hole’s depth and the thickness of soil above a large clove are different measurements. Follow the wording in your regional planting guide or supplier’s instructions. Soil coverage and a later mulch layer should also be recorded separately. If winter planting conditions are severe, get a local recommendation rather than simply doubling a general depth. ## Allow room for the mature bulb Measure spacing from one planting position to the next. A 6- to 8-inch interval gives individual elephant garlic plants more room than tightly packed ordinary garlic cloves. Choose a layout that also lets you weed and inspect the bed without stepping between plants. In a small raised bed, mark the positions before planting so the last row does not become crowded. A container should provide rooting room, drainage holes, and enough width to retain reasonable spacing. Fitting more cloves into the surface does not guarantee more useful harvested bulbs. ## Finish with moisture and a clear record Water after planting if the soil needs it, and use suitable mulch according to your climate. Keep the bed moist during active growth without leaving it saturated. Record planting date, clove source, depth, spacing, and mulch so you can interpret the harvest. Elephant garlic is a leek relative, and some plants may produce a single round bulb rather than a divided head.
