Elephant Garlic (Allium ampeloprasum var. ampeloprasum) is a perennial plant belonging to the onion genus. It is not a true garlic, but are a variant of the garden leek. Since the seed is not generally gathered from elephant garlic, this is the best use of resources and helps the bulb, though it does detract from the aesthetic value. Like regular garlic, elephant garlic can be roasted whole on the grill or baked in the oven and then used as a spread with butter on toast. Fresh elephant garlic contains mostly moisture and foams up like boiling potatoes, whether on the stove or in a glass dish in the oven. Drying in the basement for a few months reduces the moisture content, and bring out a fuller flavor.

Grow tomatoes which your family uses tomatoes

Growing a tomato, which is intended for the way your family uses tomatoes, most of the time would be a good choice.   Does your family uses tomatoes as:

  • A sauce for cooking?
  • A thick slice on top of their favorite sandwich?
  • Topping for salad?
  • A dry food snack (e.g. sun-dried tomato)?
  • As canned tomatoes for meals over the winter?

Lastly, should you choose a determinate or indeterminate tomato?   This choice is often overlooked by home gardeners. However, it is an important choice, as it will drive your behaviors in terms of food preparation and your window of opportunity to use your fresh tomatoes.

Indeterminates will still provide some density of harvest based on your planting strategy, but will, with care, throughout more of the garden season.  These tomato varieties, work well, if,  you’re looking for a tomato from which to make sandwiches from throughout the summer,  want a few tomatoes from time to time to add to the top of a salad, or perhaps, to dry some tomatoes in small batches to use as snack or in cooking later.

Requirements

  •  Any warm, mellow, garden soil is suited to its growth, having good drainage;  full sun or partial shade.

Planting

Under good management, the plants will soon completely cover the surface of the ground, and the bed will not need renewal for many years.

Harvesting

  • The leaves, in their green state, may be taken directly from the plants as they are required for use.
