Garden cloches provide an effective means of protecting delicate vegetable seedlings, protecting flowers and shrubs, as well as increasing fruit-bearing plants’ productivity. With proper care and maintenance practices in place, they should remain in excellent condition year after season for use in your garden.
Utilizing landscape fabric is essential to protecting young plants in windy areas from harm, but improper installation can cause it to shift, creating holes through which pests may gain entry.
1. Soil Seals
Soil sealing, the practice of permanently covering soil with impermeable material such as plastic bags or concrete slabs, can have devastating impacts on ecosystems. Soil sealing has the ability to decrease soil productivity, increase flooding, water scarcity, soil erosion and climate change–indeed it has even contributed to global climate change! Unfortunately, rates of soil sealing have been increasing worldwide with some of the most fertile agricultural land being affected.
Attenuating this problem requires anchoring landscaping fabric securely to the ground using landscape stakes or pegs, since shifting fabric exposes soil, creating gaps where weeds can grow. Furthermore, it’s crucial that it’s secured around edges and at intervals throughout all of an area, particularly windy environments – this prevents it becoming an “flag” in your garden that gets blown around by wind gusts. Landscape anchor pins provided in this kit feature heavy-duty spiral stakes designed to penetrate different types of soil while keeping fabric securely firmly anchored firmly anchored.
4. Cloches
Garden cloches are powerful tools for providing protection for plants from harsh weather and providing them with an environment suitable for healthy growth. When maintained with care and properly, garden cloches will prolong their lifespan while improving performance and life span.
Cloches provide early protection for seedlings against frost and chill in spring and extend growing seasons into fall, enabling gardens to harvest a range of crops within one season. Furthermore, they keep soil warmer while decreasing root rot risk.
Cloches trap moisture through both soil evaporation and plant transpiration, creating an ongoing cycle of condensation and rehydration for consistent water availability for plants. This allows less frequent watering – saving both time and resources!
Cloches provide an ideal environment for healthy growth; however, high humidity levels can create issues like mold and mildew growth. To combat this issue, partially lift your cloche during peak heat periods of the day or add additional air vents as a solution.
