Homemade Ham and Pineapple Pizza features our go-to pizza dough – a mix of wheat flour, bread flour and yeast, for a lighter and crispier crust ideal for any pizza!
To create the pizza filling, first pressure cook pineapple slices in 1/4 cup water for 3 to 4 whistles until tender, drain off excess liquid, set aside, then combine cooked pineapple, paneer, capsicum and onions along with Britannia Roasted Garlic Spreadz mixed herbs into a mixing bowl and add salt as desired. Vegan Parmesan
If mozzarella isn’t your cup of tea, why not replace it with some shredded vegan parmesan cheese instead? This makes a delicious pizza topping without increasing overall cheese consumption. Plus it can help use up leftover vegan ricotta!
Make sure your plant-based pizza cheese melts smoothly in your oven with proper preparation. While this may take some extra work, the effort will pay off! There are now many options available in grocery stores such as Follow Your Heart, Vevan and Parmela which should help ensure you find something suitable.
To create the crust, combine chickpea flour, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, avocado oil and filtered water in a medium bowl and combine until batter is pourable – almost like pancake batter. Transfer this batter onto a large lightly greased baking sheet and spread into an even circle shape.
Roll out dough into an oval or rectangular shape on a lightly floured surface. Add tomato sauce, fried eggplant slices and vegan parmesan on top, followed by baking until its edges have turned golden-brown and vegetables have softened, which should take 12-15 minutes.
To create vegan parmesan, combine raw cashews (I recommend Forager Project but Violife can also work), salt, nutritional yeast and garlic powder into a food processor until it resembles grated parmesan cheese in texture and appearance. Refrigerate any extra until ready to use!
Middle Eastern Spice Blend
Have you ever experienced the thrill of biting into an irresistibly spicy beef, chicken, or lamb shawarma from a spit or pita? While there may be variations to this delicious sandwich dish, many Middle Eastern cuisine dishes focus on one particular spice mix called Za’atar that creates its distinct aroma and flavors.
This blend is herby, tangy, nutty with just the slightest kick of heat. While ingredients may differ slightly depending on where in the Middle East you reside, typically this mix will include thyme, oregano, marjoram, sumac and sesame seeds.
Some recipes also incorporate black peppercorns, paprika, ground cinnamon and cloves for an authentic Middle Eastern spice blend known as Ras el Hanout; its ingredients differ slightly but share similar flavor profiles.
Za’atar gets its spicy bite from sumac, an antioxidant-rich fruit from Rhus coriaria that’s dried and ground into a coarse powder for use in recipes. Sumac gives the dish its distinctive lemony-tart flavor while providing additional antioxidant benefits.
To create your own za’atar spice blend, toast whole spices in a skillet over medium-high heat until fragrant, approximately 3 to 5 minutes. This will release their oils and heighten their flavor. After toasting is complete, combine all the ingredients into an airtight jar at room temperature before using on pizza dough before baking – simply brushing some olive oil onto it beforehand then topping with your homemade spice blend!
Fresh Herbs
Herbs make a tasty pizza topping, but can be difficult to work with. A pizza oven’s 400deg F heat can quickly discolor tender herbs into bitter sauce; therefore it is essential that they be properly prepared and stored prior to being added into a pizza.
Start with fresh, high-quality ingredients.
