Natural pest control for lettuce and other salad greens entails using multiple tactics rather than toxic chemicals alone. Plant flowering plants such as marigolds, nasturtiums, chamomile, and dill near your lettuce to attract beneficial insects that feed off of pests like aphids, caterpillars, pillbugs and more.

Aphids

As an alternative approach, low-rate applications of insecticidal soap may also work. However, be sure to wash away any soap residue before eating your greens!
Organic lettuce producers frequently intercrop their lettuce fields with quick-flowering annuals that serve as both habitat and food sources for syrphid flies that hunt aphids – including baby’s breath (Gypsophila grandiflora), common coriander (Coriandrum sativum), Persian clover and sweet alyssum – in order to provide food sources and habitat for predatory insects called “syrphid flyway systems.” Such measures help prevent pests from migrating onto main crops – known as flyway systems.
Caterpillars
Caterpillars cause considerable damage to lettuce and other salad greens by chewing holes into them with their teeth or chewing through gashes made by them. Armyworms, loopers and cutworm larvae can be particularly destructive, feeding on inner leaves near the head causing wilting or collapse (see picture). Row covers are the ideal way of protecting lettuce against caterpillars but foliar insecticides are sometimes necessary – Bt is an organic option which works quickly by disintegrating caterpillar stomach linings to kill caterpillars killing them completely – Bt is easily available online as it’s readily found online!
Beet armyworm larvae migrate from cotton or alfalfa fields onto lettuce in autumn, where they cause significant damage. Furthermore, the beet armyworm can invade surrounding weedy areas near lettuce fields, where its presence leads to widespread seedling damage as well as mature plant deaths.
The beet armyworm can be distinguished from other Lepidopterous larvae by the dark stripes on its head and back and hairs and tubercles which become more visible with darker larvae. Furthermore, its antennae tips are larger than on other Lepidopterous species. In order to manage Heliothinae populations effectively and lower populations over time, regularly inspect fields during head formation and treat with foliar insecticide as needed; ensure you time applications so they do not feed within their head formation area.
Leaf Miners
Leaf miners cause damage by burrowing through leaves and creating squiggly paths that are opaque at first, then brown as they progress. While they don’t kill lettuce plants directly, their activity does hinder their growth and yield. To protect seedlings and monitor this pest’s activity more closely, inspect seedlings regularly for these squiggly paths, especially around their cotyledons and early true leaves of plants; feeding usually occurs on these regions first and if many mines are found apply a botanical pesticide like Entrust SC formulation of spinosad for prevention of spread; failing that insectary plants or yellow sticky traps may attract natural enemies that will prey upon leaf miners in order to prey on them!
Row covers can be an effective tool in deterring leaf miners, and can easily be installed beforehand with materials like reemay or hoop house material. By blocking adult female moths’ access to crops for egg laying purposes, row covers block them. For added defense against potential egg laying incidents include trap crops such as lambs quarter and columbine in your garden layout plan.

Slugs & Snails
An infestation of slugs or snails devouring your lettuce crop can be both frustrating and taste-ruining, yet it is good news that natural predators like snakes, toads, chickens and wild or domesticated birds are effective at controlling their numbers.
Crop rotation and tilling the soil each year to interrupt their breeding cycle of these pests is highly effective at curbing their population growth.
