Self-Reliance by Ralph Waldo Emerson is considered one of the most well-known philosophical essays. In this book, the author presents his principle of self-reliance. It was originally published in his masterpiece Essays: First Series. The Essays contain vital discussions on self-reliance and leadership. It also contains a wide-ranging discussion of various topics such as Friendship and marriage, Education, Health, Imagination, Nature, Philosophy, Science, and Spirituality.
As we are all aware, Self-Reliance by Ralph Waldo Emerson is considered one of the masterpieces of American pragmatism. In this book, he presents his principles on self-reliance. His main thesis is that it is impossible to be successful without any effort or contribution from oneself. This can be seen from the very first paragraph of the introduction where he writes: “No system, therefore, can claim to have attained its advent by the simple formula of letting yourself do whatever you choose to do.” Thus, he firmly believes that it is up to each individual to contribute to developing self-reliance.
Self-Reliance by Ralph Waldo Emerson introduces four concepts to discuss self-reliance. These concepts are Friendship, Self-agency, Self-efficacy, and Transcendentalism. In the introduction, the author writes: “Friendship is the belief in the right of companionship with a superior, believing their inferior to be capable of doing things for himself.” So, basically, friendship is the relation between a superior person and an inferior. And the idea of friendship implies that there is something greater than ourselves that helps us overcome the limitations of our human nature.
The second concept introduced in this essay, self-reliance, is the ability to have control of oneself. This concept emphasizes that no matter how little we know or control our lives, others will try to control us. It implies that we have the ability to produce our own reality. However, we cannot expect that our superior knows all the answers concerning how to create our reality. So, for us to be self-reliant, we must be sure that we can control ourselves.
The third level of the self-reliance scale is self-efficacy. This is the ability to achieve a thing or meet a need. The idea of self-efficacy implies that one’s place or role has an essential meaning or relevance in the life of one’s world. So, to be self-reliant, we must be confident that we can and will do what is necessary to meet our needs.
The fourth concept which is part of the self-reliance curriculum is self-empowerment. This involves developing self-empowerment skills. These are necessary to be successful in school, at work, and in one’s personal life. Self-empowerment can be developed through creative activities such as writing, art, and music. These preschooler’s activities help them develop self-empowerment skills because they encourage them to become more active participants in their environment.
In conclusion, I would like to say that learning about the importance of self-reliance is important for all of us. We should never allow anyone to bully us into feeling dependent or too helpless. Instead, we should always strive to be the master of our situation. Ralph Waldo Emerson said that self-reliance was the cornerstone of a successful and happy life. Self-reliance helps strengthen our character and gives us a clear path toward achieving our goals and dreams. Therefore, it makes sense to learn more about self-reliance and the positive psychology associated with self-reliance.
