Bell peppers need warm soil, steady moisture, direct sun, and enough time to mature. Most failures trace to cold planting conditions, irregular watering, excess nitrogen, poor pollination, or disease pressure. How to Grow Bell Peppers From Seed or Transplants

Bell peppers are warm-season perennials commonly grown as annuals. They grow slowly during cool weather and can suffer permanent setbacks after exposure to frost.

Start seeds indoors 8 to 10 weeks before the expected final spring frost. Pepper seeds germinate most reliably when the growing medium remains between 75°F and 85°F (24°C and 29°C). At lower temperatures, germination may take several weeks or fail altogether.

Place seedlings under a strong grow light as soon as they emerge. Weak light produces thin, elongated stems. Once seedlings have several true leaves, transplant them into larger cells or small pots if their roots have filled the original containers.

Harden seedlings outdoors over 7 to 10 days. Begin with a short period in a sheltered, shaded location, then gradually increase sun and wind exposure.

Move peppers into the garden when:

  • Frost danger has passed.
  • Nighttime temperatures generally remain above 50°F to 55°F (10°C to 13°C).

Standard bell pepper plant spacing is 18 to 24 inches (46 to 61 cm) between plants, with 24 to 36 inches (61 to 91 cm) between rows. Compact cultivars may tolerate slightly closer spacing, while vigorous plants need more room.

Crowded peppers compete for sunlight, water, and soil nutrients. Dense foliage also dries slowly after rain, which can favor bacterial and fungal disease.

Choose a site receiving six to eight hours of direct sunlight. In regions with very hot summers, light afternoon shade may reduce sunscald, particularly when plants have sparse foliage.

Bell peppers generally perform well in fertile, well-drained soil with a pH near 6.0 to 6.8. Mix mature compost into poor soil before planting. Avoid placing large amounts of high-nitrogen fertilizer in the planting hole. Excess nitrogen often produces abundant leaves but delays flowering and fruit development.

A light-colored mulch can keep soil temperatures lower in hot climates. Dark plastic mulch is sometimes used in cool regions because it warms the soil. Organic mulch, such as clean straw or shredded leaves, should be applied after the ground has warmed.

Water deeply enough to moisten the active root zone, usually the upper 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) of soil. Allow the surface to begin drying before watering again, but do not let established plants wilt repeatedly.

A finger test provides a practical guide. If the soil feels dry about 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) below the surface, irrigation is usually warranted. Drip irrigation or a soaker hose directs water toward the roots and keeps the foliage drier than overhead sprinklers.

Irregular watering is especially damaging after fruit begins forming. Repeated cycles of dry soil followed by heavy irrigation can contribute to fruit cracking and blossom-end rot.

Morning watering gives leaves and soil surfaces time to dry during the day. If evening irrigation is necessary, apply water near the soil rather than soaking the foliage.

Growing Bell Peppers in Containers

Bell peppers in containers need adequate root volume, unrestricted drainage, and frequent moisture checks. A container holding at least 5 gallons (19 liters) can support one compact plant. A 7- to 10-gallon (26- to 38-liter) pot provides a larger moisture reserve for full-size cultivars.

Use commercial potting mix rather than garden soil. Garden soil can compact inside a pot, reducing drainage and root aeration. Every container needs drainage holes.

Container peppers may require daily watering during hot weather. Water until some liquid leaves the drainage holes, then discard water collected in a saucer. Constantly saturated potting mix deprives roots of oxygen and encourages decay.

Nutrients also leave containers through drainage. Apply a fertilizer labeled for vegetables according to its directions. Feeding too often, or using a high-nitrogen lawn fertilizer, can produce large plants with few peppers.

Dark containers absorb heat. In very hot regions, place pots where their sides receive some shade, or use light-colored containers to limit root-zone heating.

Flowers Fall Without Producing Fruit

Dry soil, excess nitrogen, and very low or high humidity can produce similar symptoms. Plants often resume setting fruit after temperatures moderate.

Blossom-End Rot

Blossom-end rot appears as a dark, sunken patch at the blossom end of a pepper. The immediate cause is inadequate calcium reaching developing fruit, but garden soil may already contain enough calcium. Irregular watering, damaged roots, high salt levels, or rapid growth can disrupt calcium movement.

Remove badly affected fruit and keep the root zone evenly moist. Do not add lime or calcium unless a soil test indicates a deficiency or unsuitable pH.

Sunscald

Sunscald produces pale, papery patches on fruit exposed to intense sunlight. It often follows leaf loss caused by disease, pests, pruning, or physical damage.

Maintain enough foliage to shade developing peppers. Shade cloth offering modest afternoon protection may be useful in very hot climates, but excessive shade can reduce flowering.

Yellow or Distorted Leaves

Several bell pepper plant problems cause yellow leaves. Common causes include waterlogged soil, nitrogen deficiency, transplant stress, aphids, mites, and root disease.

Inspect the undersides of leaves for insects and stippling. Check soil moisture before adding water or fertilizer. A plant in saturated soil may look wilted because damaged roots cannot supply the foliage.

Leaf Spots and Sudden Wilting

Bacterial spot can cause dark lesions on leaves and fruit. Water splashing, contaminated seed, infected transplants, and handling wet plants can spread the bacteria.
