Bird window collisions often increase during fall bird migration, when millions of birds move through unfamiliar territory, many of them traveling at night. A reflective or transparent window can look like open sky, vegetation, or a clear flight path. Treating the outside surface of hazardous glass is one of the most effective steps for bird collision prevention.

Why Migrating Birds Hit Windows
Birds do not interpret glass as a solid barrier. Reflections of trees, clouds, and shrubs may appear to be usable habitat. Two windows positioned across from each other can create a visible route through a building, while glass railings and transparent corners may resemble open air.
Migration adds several hazards. Many songbirds migrate at night and stop in unfamiliar places around dawn. Tired or disoriented birds may forage near homes without recognizing local obstacles. Young birds making their first migration have even less experience with buildings.
Window strikes are not limited to tall buildings. Houses and low-rise structures account for many collisions because they are numerous and often sit among trees, gardens, feeders, and other bird habitat. A single troublesome pane may be struck repeatedly.
Noise is not a reliable indicator. Some collisions leave feathers, body marks, or a dead bird below the window, but others produce little evidence. A stunned bird may recover enough to hide before anyone notices it.
Find the Windows That Present the Greatest Risk

Backyard bird safety does not require treating every pane in the same way. Begin with windows that have a history of strikes or reflect nearby vegetation.
Stand outside during different parts of the day and look at the glass from several angles. Bright reflections change as the sun moves. A window that appears dark in the morning may reflect a tree canopy strongly in the afternoon.
Pay particular attention to:
- Large picture windows facing trees or shrubs
- Corner windows that create the appearance of open passage
- Glass doors near gardens or feeders
- Windows opposite another window or an open doorway
- Glass deck railings and balcony panels
- Panes where feathers, smudges, or dead birds have appeared
Indoor plants visible through glass can also attract birds, especially when the room behind them appears open and well lit.
Effective Treatments Go on the Outside
Exterior treatments interrupt reflections before a bird reaches the glass. Interior decals may be hidden by glare, particularly when outdoor light is brighter than indoor light.
An effective pattern covers the whole hazardous area. Small gaps matter because birds may try to fly through any opening that appears large enough for passage. Current bird-safe window guidance commonly recommends keeping gaps no wider than 2 inches, or about 5 centimeters, in every direction.
Window Decals for Birds Need Close Spacing
A few hawk silhouettes placed in the center of a large window rarely prevent collisions. Birds generally treat each silhouette as an isolated object and fly around it. The shape matters less than the spacing and coverage.
Window decals for birds can work when applied across the exterior surface in a dense, regular pattern. Dots, squares, narrow strips, or decorative shapes are all suitable if they remain visible and closely spaced.
Ultraviolet-reflective products may be less conspicuous to people, but their performance can vary with bird species, light conditions, weathering, and the amount of ultraviolet light present. A clearly visible exterior pattern provides a more dependable visual barrier.
Tape, Paint, Screens, and Cords Can Protect Large Areas
Exterior window tape can form vertical lines, a grid, or another repeated pattern. Tempera paint and washable window markers provide a low-cost seasonal treatment, though rain and cleaning may require reapplication.
Exterior insect screens can reduce reflections and may cushion an impact when mounted over the entire pane. Purpose-made cord systems, sometimes called bird savers, hang closely spaced vertical cords in front of the glass.
Specialty films can alter reflectivity while preserving some visibility from indoors. Before applying permanent film, confirm that the product is compatible with the glazing. Some insulated windows have warranty restrictions related to films, coatings, or heat absorption.
Netting requires correct installation. Loose mesh can entangle wildlife. Use a product made for collision prevention, follow its mounting instructions, and inspect it regularly for gaps or damaged sections.
Reduce Artificial Light During Fall Bird Migration
Many migratory songbirds travel after dark. Artificial light can attract or disorient birds, especially during cloudy or foggy weather. Bright buildings may draw migrants into developed areas where glass becomes a daytime hazard after the birds land.
During fall bird migration, turn off indoor and outdoor lights that are not needed overnight. Close curtains or blinds in lit rooms, particularly on upper floors. Motion sensors and timers can limit how long exterior lights remain on. Shielded fixtures that direct light downward reduce stray illumination.
These measures also apply during spring migration. Timing differs by species and region, but much of the continental United States experiences substantial fall movement from August through November. Local birding organizations and migration forecast services can identify nights with heavy movement.
Lights-out practices and daytime glass treatments address related but distinct problems. Reducing light can limit attraction and disorientation at night. Exterior window markings prevent birds from mistaking glass for habitat during daylight.
Position Feeders to Limit Collision Injuries

Feeder placement affects both the likelihood and severity of window strikes. A widely used guideline places feeders either within 3 feet (0.9 meter) of a window or more than 30 feet (9 meters) away.
At very close distances, birds leaving a feeder have little space to build speed before reaching the pane. At greater distances, birds have more room to recognize and avoid the building. Intermediate placement may let a startled bird accelerate directly toward a reflection.
This spacing guideline does not make untreated glass harmless. Exterior markings remain the more direct remedy for a window known to cause collisions.
Keep cats indoors or supervise them in a secure enclosure. A stunned bird on the ground cannot escape a roaming pet, and even a small puncture from a cat can cause a serious infection.
