Can You Recrisp Stale Chips, Crackers, and Cereal?
Crackers that have softened after absorbing moisture may regain some of their crispness with a brief turn in the oven. Spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet and heat them for a few minutes at 425°F (220°C), checking often. Let them cool before testing the texture. Oregon State University Extension recommends this method for crackers, but it will not restore food that is moldy, insect-contaminated, or rancid. extension.oregonstate.edu
Chips and cereal also soften when exposed to humid air, but the same oven treatment may brown thin chips or melt coatings on cereal. Their results can vary, so don’t assume a hot oven will fix every stale snack. If the food smells rancid, looks damp or moldy, or shows signs of insects, discard it.
Close each package well
A tight seal helps keep moisture out. Fold a cereal liner over several times, press out excess air, and clip it closed before putting the box away. Keep crackers in their inner sleeve if it closes securely; otherwise, move them to a clean, completely dry airtight container. For chips, fold the top of the bag down and secure it with a sturdy clip, taking care not to crush the chips.
An open basket can keep snack bags organized, but it does not protect them from humid air. Use a container with a lid that closes firmly if the original package will not seal.
Choose a dry pantry spot
Keep opened snacks away from steam and heat from the stove, sink, dishwasher, or oven. A cool, dry cabinet is a better choice than a shelf beside an appliance. Follow any storage directions on the package, since products and packaging vary.
Softness is usually a quality problem, but it does not tell you whether food is safe. Check for mold, insects, dampness, or an unusual rancid odor before eating.
