Pumpkin pie spice is always a useful thing to have around the house, especially in the fall when pumpkin and winter squash are cheat and abundant. Or if you are like me and simply like to eat a pumpkin pie or pumpkin custard most any time of the year. However, I find making your Pumpkin spice is best because you can adjust your spice volume to meet your taste and dietary needs. Ginger something gives people trouble with heartburn and I find that orange zest gives the spice blend and nice citrus edge which appeals to many. Here is a basic Pumpkin spice recipe, but feel free to experiment with it to best accommodate your family’s tastes.
Why Make Your Own Pumpkin Pie Spice?
Pumpkin pie spice is an aromatic blend of warm, sweet spices like cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice and cloves – the spice blend responsible for giving many classic fall recipes their signature taste without actually using pumpkin.
Making your own mix is simple and cost-effective; chances are, you already have all of the ingredients lying around!
Customization
Pumpkin pie spice, an amalgamation of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves and allspice, has become the embodiment of fall. It can be added to everything from desserts like pumpkin cookies and snickerdoodles to beverages such as lattes and smoothies; plus it costs much less than purchasing premade mixes from stores; you can customize its proportions based on personal taste! Making your own seasoning mix at home can save money as well.
Homemade pumpkin pie spice mix ingredients typically include ground cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and cloves; you may also consider including ground ginger. Cloves add an irresistibly pungent spice that perfectly balances out the sweet notes from ginger and nutmeg; for an extra zesty punch you could try including ground orange peel too.
If you’re unsure whether your spice cabinet contains these spices, they can usually be found at most grocery stores and big box retailers in the baking aisle. Look for labels stating “ground cinnamon” or simply “cinnamon,” while ginger and nutmeg labels will state either “ground ginger” or “ground nutmeg.” Cinnamon comes in two forms – Ceylon is milder in taste while cassia provides bolder yet stronger flavor profiles suitable for baking purposes.
Once all the spices have been blended together, they should be stored in an airtight and dry area until use or their expiration date (typically one to two years from purchase date).
Pumpkin pie spice mix can be used in any recipe that calls for it, from pumpkin snickerdoodles and Pumpkin Bread/Cake to making delicious coffee beverages and oatmeal toppings to flavoring apples/bananas with autumn flair! Plus, it makes an adorable foodie gift: simply wrap it in an attractive little jar for an appealing food-related present on any holiday.
