The required depth also depends on what lies beneath the bed. An open-bottom bed placed over ordinary soil gives roots access to the ground below. A bed installed over concrete, pavement, or an impervious liner must contain the full rooting depth.
Useful depth guidelines include:
- 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm): Lettuce, radishes, spinach, green onions, and many herbs
- 10 to 12 inches (25 to 30 cm): Beans, peas, peppers, broccoli, cucumbers, and compact tomatoes

2. What should go in the bottom of a raised bed?

4. Can ordinary garden soil be used in raised beds?
Existing garden soil can form part of a raised-bed mixture if it drains adequately and has not been contaminated. It should not be dug from an area treated with persistent herbicides or located near a suspected source of lead or other pollutants.
Heavy soil placed alone in a wooden or metal frame often compacts. Blend it thoroughly with finished compost and an appropriate coarse organic material before planting. Avoid distinct layers because abrupt differences in texture can impede water movement and root growth.
Bagged products labeled “garden soil” are often intended for mixing with native ground rather than container use. Read the label before using them in a bed, especially a bed with a solid bottom.
5. Does a raised bed need drainage?
Yes. Most raised beds drain through their open bottoms, so separate drainage holes are unnecessary. Beds on concrete, decks, rooftops, or other solid surfaces need drainage openings near the lowest points.
Standing water excludes oxygen from the root zone and encourages root decay. Warning signs include:
- Water remaining on the surface long after irrigation

6. How often should raised beds be watered?
Raised-bed watering should follow soil moisture rather than the calendar. Push a finger or narrow trowel 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 cm) into the soil. Water when that layer feels dry and the soil no longer holds together easily.
New seedlings may need light watering every day during hot or windy weather. Established vegetables generally benefit from deeper, less frequent irrigation. Since one cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet, the bed needs about 1.2 cubic yards before allowing for settling.

10. How wide and long should a raised bed be?
A bed accessible from both sides should generally be no wider than 4 feet (1.2 meters). A bed against a wall or fence should usually be 2 to 3 feet (0.6 to 0.9 meter) wide so the back remains reachable.
Length is flexible. Beds longer than 8 to 12 feet may require extra framing support to prevent the sides from bowing. Long beds can also make walking around the garden inconvenient.
Paths need enough room for kneeling, carrying tools, or using mobility equipment. About 24 inches may suffice for foot traffic, while 36 to 48 inches provides more usable clearance for wheelbarrows and many wheelchairs.
11. How many vegetables fit in one raised bed?
Plant capacity depends on mature size, growth habit, season, and trellising. Seed-packet spacing is a better starting point than seedling size at transplanting.

Routine soil tests can guide lime and fertilizer use. Adding compost, manure, and fertilizer every season without testing may create excessive phosphorus or soluble salts.
15. Why does the soil level drop each year?
Soil settles as air spaces collapse and organic material decomposes. Some soil also leaves the bed on harvested roots, tools, shoes, and runoff. A modest decline is normal during the first year after filling.
Top up the bed with a mixture compatible with the existing soil. Compost alone may cause repeated settling because much of its volume continues to decompose. If the surface drops several inches every season, the original filling material probably contained a high proportion of undecomposed wood or other unstable organic matter.
16. Do raised beds need fertilizer?
Many raised beds need supplemental nutrients, but the type and quantity should follow soil conditions and crop demand. Compost contributes some nutrients, though nutrient concentrations vary and release is gradual.
Leafy vegetables commonly need more nitrogen than root crops. Fruiting crops such as tomatoes also require adequate potassium, but excessive nitrogen can produce abundant foliage with limited fruit.
