Why Make a Smoothie This Summer?

Smoothies make an easy and quick breakfast option on-the-go, and are packed with nutrients from various fruits or combinations of them. Add extra proteins such as whey or soy milk, greens powder, chia seeds, or avocado (great for skin health!) to keep you full for longer!

Smoothies have quickly become a go-to choice at many coffee shops and quick serve restaurants, as well as being widely available bottled and frozen mixes from grocery stores. But it’s important to remember that not all smoothies are equal; some contain unexpectedly high levels of sugar or fat (for instance a strawberry smoothie with whole milk and ice packs 15g of fat, 9 of which are saturated).

Making your own healthy summer smoothie at home is easy and quick, using fresh fruit and low-fat yogurt as ingredients. To add an extra nutritional punch, consider including raw spinach or kale in any smoothie recipe for an added dose of dark leafy greens as well as iron!

When making a smoothie, opt for a base that doesn’t contain juice or fruit puree, as these liquids tend to be high in sugar and lack fiber. Try replacing this liquid with spring water, coconut water, or an unsweetened almond milk alternative as your base instead. Alternatively, make your own green tea, allow it to cool, and use this as the basis of your smoothie: its antioxidants may support healthy liver function as you detox in 48 hours! Plus it provides a delicious caffeine fix!

As temperatures heat up, try satisfying your thirst and relaxing with an aromatic smoothie.
