Fishing Thought of the Day: Change Your Approach Before You Change Your Spot

A quiet stretch of water does not always mean the fish have left. Fish may hold deeper, face a different direction, or reject a lure that moves too quickly. Before starting the motor or walking to another bank, make three deliberate fishing adjustments: change depth, change presentation, and change casting angle.

This fishing strategy separates an unproductive location from an unproductive method. It also reduces the chance of leaving fish that were present but unwilling to respond to the first cast.

  • Alter lure speed, action, size, or profile.
  • Cast from a different direction.
  • Make controlled changes rather than changing everything at once.
  • Move after the likely parts of the spot have been tested.

A Fishing Spot Is Not a Single Point

Anglers often treat a fishing spot as one fixed target: a dock post, weed edge, submerged tree, rock pile, or current seam. Fish experience the same location as a three-dimensional space shaped by depth, light, temperature, current, cover, and access to prey.

A bass may suspend several feet above a brush pile rather than sit inside it. Trout may hold behind a rock but feed along the current seam beside it. Crappie may gather under a dock while remaining too deep for a lure retrieved just beneath the surface.

A few casts through one portion of the water column reveal little about the entire spot. The first lure may pass above the fish, move against their preferred feeding direction, or travel too quickly for the conditions.

Productive changing fishing tactics begins with a simple rule: adjust one major variable at a time. A structured process makes each cast informative.

First Adjustment: Change the Fishing Depth

Depth should usually be the first variable tested because a lure cannot attract many bites if it never enters the zone fish are using.

Start with the depth that appears most likely based on visible cover, recent bites, water clarity, and weather. Then work above and below that level. The exact sequence depends on the species and setting, but the purpose remains the same: divide the water column into useful sections.

Test the Water Column Deliberately

A practical sequence might include:

  1. Upper water: Use a topwater lure, shallow-running plug, unweighted soft plastic, or high rod position.
  2. Middle water: Choose a suspending bait, moderate-running crankbait, spinner, swimbait, or counted-down jig.
  3. Bottom area: Use a weighted rig, jig, sinking lure, or bottom-contact presentation.

Lure design affects fishing depth, but retrieve speed and rod position matter as well. Raising the rod tip may keep some lures higher. Lowering the rod tip can make certain crankbaits or swimming lures run deeper. A longer pause gives sinking lures more time to descend.

Count-down methods provide a basic form of repeatability. If a sinking lure takes roughly ten seconds to reach bottom, casts begun after a two-second, five-second, and eight-second count can sample different depths. Sink rates vary with lure weight, line diameter, current, and trailer shape, so the count is a reference rather than a precise depth measurement.

Watch for indirect evidence. A lure that collects weeds may be running too deep. Occasional bottom contact shows that the lower zone is being reached. Followers, flashes, bumps, or fish visible on sonar may indicate that the lure is near the correct depth even if no fish commits.

Second Adjustment: Change the Lure Presentation

Once a useful depth has been identified, alter how the lure behaves within that zone. Lure presentation includes speed, cadence, direction of movement, profile, vibration, and pauses.

During slow fishing, many anglers simply retrieve more slowly. That can work, but speed is only one part of presentation. A lure may need longer pauses, shorter movements, or less vibration rather than a uniformly slow retrieve.

Change Cadence Before Changing Lures

Small changes often produce clearer information than opening the tackle box after every cast. Try several casts with distinct retrieves:

  • A steady retrieve at moderate speed
  • A slower retrieve with intermittent pauses
  • Short twitches followed by a long pause
  • Brief accelerations that imitate fleeing prey
  • Bottom contact with periods of complete stillness

The appropriate sequence depends on the lure. A jerkbait responds to twitches and pauses, while a jig can be dragged, hopped, shaken, or held still. Spinnerbaits and crankbaits often benefit from contact with cover, changes in speed, or brief deflections.

Fish behavior should guide the next adjustment. A fish that follows but refuses a lure may respond to a smaller profile, a pause, or an abrupt change in speed. Short strikes can indicate that fish are interested but not fully committed. In that case, a more compact lure or slower movement may place the hook closer to the point of contact.

Color changes sometimes matter, particularly when visibility changes with depth, cloud cover, or water clarity. Yet color is often less consequential than fishing depth and movement. A perfectly colored lure passing several feet above inactive fish is unlikely to solve the problem.

Third Adjustment: Change Casting Angles

Casting angles alter the path, depth, speed, and apparent direction of a lure. The same bait retrieved from another position may behave like a different presentation.

Current makes this effect easy to see. A lure cast upstream moves differently from one cast downstream. An upstream cast may drift naturally toward holding fish. A downstream presentation may remain in one area longer but face or move in a less natural direction. A cross-current cast sweeps through the water and may expose the lure to several current speeds.

Angle also matters in still water. Fish often orient toward cover, shade, wind-driven current, or an expected route of prey. A cast parallel to a weed edge keeps the lure near cover longer than a perpendicular cast. A lure retrieved along the shaded side of a dock may remain in cooler, darker water for most of the retrieve.

Use Geometry to Keep the Lure in the Strike Zone

Consider a narrow band of productive water beside a drop-off. A perpendicular cast crosses that band briefly. A diagonal cast stays within it longer. A parallel cast may keep the lure at the productive depth and distance for nearly the entire retrieve.

Useful casting angles include:

  • Parallel to a bank, weed line, dock, or ledge
  • Diagonal across a point or depth change
  • Past cover, followed by a retrieve toward it
  • Into current, across current, and with current
  • From the opposite side of the structure when access permits

Boat position and bank access limit some angles. Avoid forcing a cast through unsafe footing, boat traffic, overhead branches, private property, or hazardous current. A better angle is not worth a preventable accident.

Use a Simple Adjustment Sequence

Random lure changes make it difficult to identify why a bite occurred. A short sequence gives each adjustment a purpose.

At a promising spot, try the following:

  1. Make several casts at the most likely depth.
  2. Test at least one shallower and one deeper path.
  3. Vary retrieve speed and cadence at the most promising depth.
  4. Present the lure from two or more casting angles.
  5. Change lure category if the spot still appears suitable.
  6. Move after the accessible water has received a fair test.

“Several casts” does not require a fixed number. A small isolated stump may need fewer attempts than a long weed edge. Complex cover, strong current, or fish visible on sonar may justify additional time. Repeating the same unproductive cast, however, provides little new information.

This fishing strategy also prevents excessive commitment to one location. Testing a spot does not mean remaining there indefinitely. The goal is to distinguish between fish that need another presentation and water that lacks active fish.

When Moving Is the Better Decision

Changing spots becomes reasonable when the available depths, useful lure presentations, and practical casting angles have produced no signs of fish. Signs include bites, follows, visible movement, bait activity, marks on sonar, or contact that suggests fish are present.

Environmental evidence can support the decision. Water with suitable temperature, oxygen, current, cover, and forage deserves more attention than featureless water without visible life. Conditions differ by species and season, so no single indicator proves that fish are absent.

Finding active fish may require covering water, especially during seasonal migrations or on large lakes and rivers. The three-adjustment method should remain brief enough to preserve mobility. It is a diagnostic process, not a reason to remain attached to an attractive piece of cover.

Record Which Change Produced the Bite

The first bite after an adjustment contains useful information. Record the approximate depth, retrieve, casting direction, cover type, and weather conditions. A brief note on a phone or in a fishing log is sufficient.

Patterns may appear during the same outing. Several bites on the windward side of points, at a specific depth, or after long pauses can guide later decisions. The pattern may weaken as light, current, tide, or wind changes, so treat it as a working hypothesis rather than a permanent rule.
